A girl's own story (1984) Jane Campion A Girl's Own Story is a 1984 short Australian drama film directed by Jane Campion. Jane was born in 1954 in Wellington, New Zealand. She was born in to the industry, her parents Richard Champion and Edith Hannah were prominent figures in New Zealand theatre. They attempted to build national theatre and produce plays that articulated distinctly national aesthetic. Campion has been influenced by many people however, unlike the majority of directors she was not influenced by other directors but instead people from the arts. This includes Joseph Beuys who was a sculptor who created socially and politically charged art which negotiated physical and psychological trauma through irrational mythical imagery. His inspiration can be seen through Campion's focus on physical trauma throughout the movies she has directed. La Jetee

La Jetee La Jetee is a french science-fiction short film created in 1962 by Chris Marker. Even though it is a short film I don't think calling it a short film does it justice. This is because the majority of the film is made up of still shots. Even though the film is mostly still shots it still makes a great story with characters with real feelings and a great strong uncomfortable atmosphere throughout the film. I personally think the film would not have been as successful as it was if it used moving shots for the whole film. This is because Chris Marker makes the viewer work to understand the story and the post-apocalyptic world it is set in. With films using moving shots especially Hollywood films the viewer is fed the plot and just has to watch and enjoy themselves but with La Jetee you have to focus on each shot or you will get lost. La Ricotta Visual elements The main visual element of importance in La Ricotta is the colour. Colour or lack of colour is used in scenes to create atmosphere. For example in the opening scene where the cast represents the last supper the colour is neutral which gives of a very calm atmosphere, it is easy on the eyes. This goes well with the scene because the actors are very relaxed (dancing). When the actors are filming the film the colours in the shot have a high saturation compared to the rest of the film. This creates a odd atmosphere and makes the audience wary that something wrong could happen. The final scene of La Ricotta was the scene that had the biggest impact on me. Pasolini like all good directors knew how to use the formal elements to add to the films they direct. The most effective formal element in this scene is sound.
